OVERVIEW: Diamond Head area encompasses a large section of neighborhoods bordering Waikiki on the west end following Kapahulu to Saint Louis Heights up the hill to west of Hawaii Kai neighborhood. It is a mix of older communities and newer gated subdivision, hillside neighborhoods, ocean front estates, and small subdivided land areas. Some of the most expensive homes in the Hawaiian Islands are found in the Diamond Head Region.

SITES OF INTEREST:

Diamond Head Crater - one of the top landmarks in Oahu. Hike up to the top of the 760-foot volcanic cone and enjoy 360-degree views of the southern shore. The crater was created by a volcanic eruption about half a million years ago, the Hawaiians called the crater Leahi or the brow of the ahi (tuna) in reference to the shape of the crater. In the 19th Century, a group of sailors found calcite crystals in the crater which they thought were diamonds. From then on, Leahi has been called Diamond Head.

Kahala Hotel - located at the end of Kahala Avenue the hotel neighbors Waialae Golf Course. It is popular for American Presidents and foreign dignitaries to stay due to its private and secured location.

Shangri La - a home in Hawaii of the late heiress, Doris Duke, who inherited a fortune at age 12 when her father, James Buchanan Duke, who amassed wealth from tobacco and hydroelectric power industries, died. It is now a museum displaying her love and collection of Islamic art and architecture in the natural environment.

Waialae Golf Course - this is the venue for men's PGA Sony Open golf tournament held every January.

Kahala Mall - featuring national franchises and Hawaii based shops and restaurants are found in this air-conditioned regional mall. Macy's Department Store and Long's Drug Store are anchor tenants.
